FAQs

Questions families often ask

Practical answers about speech therapy, fees, safety and getting started.

What ages and speech difficulties does Pit-Stop support?

Children aged 4–10 years with mild to moderate speech sound difficulties. Broader language, literacy, stuttering, feeding and swallowing needs are outside the practice's current core scope.

Do I need a referral?

Parents and authorised carers can make an enquiry directly. A GP referral is not required to contact the practice, although specific Medicare rebates may have referral requirements.

How much does an assessment cost?

The standard Initial Speech Assessment is $395, including up to 60 minutes of face-to-face assessment, analysis, a written report and recommendations. Additional assessment is discussed and quoted before proceeding.

Do I need to pay for a whole term?

No. Individual intervention costs $135 per 45-minute session. Up to eight sessions may be provided within a NSW school term, based on clinical needs and availability. Families do not prepay or commit to eight sessions. Routine intervention is not offered during school holidays.

What happens at the end of an intervention period?

A standard progress review is generally incorporated into the final intervention session at no additional fee. This may lead to discharge, monitoring, a therapy break, further intervention or a referral.

Can I claim through private health insurance or Medicare?

Some eligible families may be able to claim a rebate, depending on their health fund, level of cover or Medicare eligibility and referral requirements. Please confirm eligibility and rebate amounts with your fund or Medicare before your appointment. Pit-Stop provides electronic invoices; on-the-spot HICAPS claiming is not available.

How do invoices and cancellation fees work?

Invoices are generally emailed after appointments and are payable within seven days by bank transfer. More than 24 hours’ notice of cancellation attracts no fee. For intervention, a late cancellation fee of $67.50 or a no-show fee of $135 may apply; for assessment, $100 or $150 respectively may apply. Illness and exceptional circumstances may be considered.

What are your child safeguarding arrangements?

Children's safety, dignity and wellbeing are central to Pit-Stop Speech Pathology. A parent or authorised carer must remain inside the therapy room for the entire appointment; drop-off appointments are not offered. The accompanying adult's relationship and authority to consent are confirmed, and relevant safeguarding, consent, privacy and incident-response procedures apply.

Where are appointments held?

Pit-Stop is based in Bathurst, NSW. Appointment location and details are confirmed privately with families.

What if Pit-Stop isn't the right service for my child?

If a child's needs fall outside the practice's focused speech sound scope, we will explain this and recommend an appropriate alternative or further assessment where indicated.

What professional standards apply?

Pit-Stop Speech Pathology follows applicable professional and legal obligations, including the NSW Code of Conduct for Non-Registered Health Practitioners (PDF). Concerns about health services can also be raised with the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission.
